There are three main types of fingerprints. There are visible prints, latent prints and impressed prints (aka Plastic prints).

Visible prints are also called patent prints. These prints are most likely to be left by blood that reveal them in an obvious way. They ususal are like this when a blood, dirt, ink, or grease covered finger comes in contact with a very smooth solid surface and leaves ridge impression that is visible without out having to investigate.

However, Latent fingerprints aren't as obvious as patent fingerprints are. They are formed from the sweat. These prints cannot be identified until there are dusted with graphite or talp.

Impressed prints are also called plastic prints these are indentations left on soft surfaces, such as clay, wax, paint and other variuos sufaces. They are visible and can be viewed or photographed without development.
